Badgers Title Hopes Come Up Short Featured

Salpointe Catholic wins intense battle 2-1

The boys Divison 4 state soccer championship game took place last night, with the now three-time champion Salpointe Catholic Lancers, just getting by a hard fighting Prescott Badgers team 2-1. It was a cool evening at Williams Field High School in Gilbert, although warmer than Prescott, with the Badgers battling it out with one of the best soccer programs in the state. The Lancers picked up their second goal five minutes into the second half, by Francisco Manzo, and unfortunaltely for the Badgers it held up.

Salpointe Catholic took a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the contest on a penalty kick goal by Alfonso Cabrera. The Badgers continued to trail 1-0 until Fernando Rodriquez tied the game up with just under four minutes remaining in the first half.

In the second half, Francisco Manzo snuck a kick into the net just five minutes into the second half to put the Lancers up 2-1. The Badgers and Lancers kept getting after it, but neither team managed to get another ball into the net.

Under second year coach Philip Reid, the Badgers achieved making the state title game for the first time in school history, along with having a winning record in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008-09. The challenge for next season will be replacing 15 seniors.

The #6 seeded Badgers finished an outstanding season at (14-4-1) as state runner-up. Salpointe Catholic, the #1 seed, wins their third straight boys soccer championship, ending their season at (16-5-2).
