Bill's Newscast: Fish Hatchery Featured

$3M in renovations are underway at the Sterling Springs Fish Hatchery.

The Sterling Springs Fish Hatchery is closed while more than 3 million dollars in renovations are underway.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department owns the hatchery in Oak Creek Canyon.  Officials say it’s been in need of improvements.  The current infrastructure is aging and some of the piping is more than 70 years old.  The pipe, delivery system, valves and concrete raceways are in dire need of replacement.  In addition, with decreasing supplies, it’s going to become necessary to operate with less water.  The Sterling Springs rehabilitation project involves water inflow pipes leading to the hatchery, as well as various control boxes along the pipelines.  Construction also includes a cover canopy and fence around the concrete raceways, a new storage building and a partial recirculation system.  Game and Fish officials say Sterling Springs produces and supplies hundreds of thousands of trout to Page Springs Hatchery, also in Oak Creek.  It’s the largest trout hatchery in Arizona.

The Chino Valley Shooting Facility will reopen to the public starting this Saturday.

The Prescott Sportsmen’s Club had operated the range, located off Highway 89.  Last August, Town officials were made aware of internal conflict within the Club.  The Treasurer had quit the Board and the Range Master had declared he wouldn’t work since he couldn’t get paid.  As a result, Town officials closed the range for safety purposes as of October 1st and the entire Board resigned last month.  Town staff will be taking over operations while future options are explored.  The range will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am to 4 pm.    Cost is 10 dollars per day for adults and children under the age of 18 are free, but they must be accompanied by an adult.
