The body of Debra Schwartz has been found in an Oak Creek slot canyon. Foul play is not suspected at this time.

Another school board vacancy, another position that won’t be filled right away

Mingus Union High School District Governing Board member Brenda Zenan has resigned due to her family relocating to Tucson. Yavapai County School Superintendent Tim Carter says this vacancy comes at a time when candidates are being nominated for the November 8th General Election. The candidate filing period starts on July 11th and ends on August 10th. Carter has announced he doesn’t plan on filling the vacancy at this time due to the timeline this position would require. The appointment will be a result of the outcome of the General Election and will occur in mid-November. The person who fills this position will be the non-incumbent who receives the highest number of votes. Carter had previously announced he would be filling a vacant position on the Yarnell Elementary School District Governing Board in the same manner.

Foul play isn’t suspected in the death of an Arizona State University professor

Coconino County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Gerry Blair says the body of 59 year old Debra Schwartz was found in a remote part of Oak Creek Canyon Sunday morning. Campground staff told the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department Friday Schwartz had failed to check out of her space at the Pine Flat Campground in Oak Creek Canyon, where she had been staying last Tuesday through Thursday. Blair explains Sheriff’s Office officials are working with the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death. It appears Schwartz left her campsite, including her car, tent and camping gear and didn’t return. She had been camping alone.
