Bill's Newscast: Honoring Women Who Served in Vietnam

The VA will honor women who served in the Vietnam War today.

No rain, no park

Due to a lack of rainfall, the Fain Park closure has been extended.  The Town of Prescott Valley Parks and Recreation Department closed the park in January while staff performed repairs.  The park was expected to reopen this month, but no rain has kept the lake from refilling.  Once adequate rainfall is received, the park will be reopened to the public.  The Parks and Recreation Department is reminding hikers and prospectors the park’s boundaries are inclusive of both Lynx and Rose Creeks near Stoneridge Drive and continuing beyond the lake’s dam.  The Town is asking that residents and visitors don’t enter the park at this time.

Chino Valley residents to find out about Home Rule

Chino Valley residents can learn about the Home Rule extension that will be on the August 30th ballot.  The Chino Valley Town Council will hold 2 public hearings on the Home Rule extension during its voting sessions at 6 pm on March 22nd and April 30th at Town Hall on Highway 89.  Town staff will present an overview of the ballot measure at both hearings.  Officials say the State imposes a limit on the amount of revenues the Town may allocate in its annual budget.  With budget adoption, Council must also put an expenditure limitation in place.   This creates the required balanced budget.  If the state imposed limit doesn’t reflect the actual revenue needs of the town, state law allows voters to approve 1 of several expenditure limitation options.  In 1985, voters approved the Home Rule option for the first time and it’s been extended 6 times since then.  The current extension expires in June of next year.

Scheduled speaker retired Air Force Colonel Wanda Wright as VA honors women who served during Vietnam War.

The Northern Arizona VA Health Care System will be honoring the women who served in the Vietnam War. A recognition ceremony for women who served runs from 3 to 5 this afternoon at the Health Care System Theatre building, located on Highway 89 in Prescott.  The scheduled guest speaker is retired Air Force Colonel Wanda Wright, who now serves as Director of the Arizona Department of Veterans Services in Phoenix.  This year marks the 50th anniversary of U.S. combat units deployed to Vietnam.  Bordering areas of Laos and Cambodia were bombed by U.S. forces in 1968.  Direct U.S. military involvement ended in August 1973 and the capture of Saigon by the north Vietnamese army 2 years later marked the end of the war.
