Sales, Menus and Recipes: It's Dairy Month Featured

June is Dairy Month

Dairy products have been celebrated in June since 1937. In that year a grocery organization started to promote increased milk and dairy consumption in June because spring was when an abundance of milk was naturally available and prices were lower. By 1937 the dairy farmer’s organizations had picked up on the idea and joined in promoting June as Dairy Month.

Milk is quite a nutritional powerhouse, especially 1% fat or fat free types. Natural milk is quite high in saturated fat, but people have been skimming of the fat for millennia to make butter. an 8 oz glass of 1% milk containsonlny 102 calories with 13 grams of carbohydrates (as sugar), 2.5 grams of fat, 9.8 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids and 73 mg of Omega 6 fatty acids. It also has 8.2 grams of protein. Milk is high in Calcium, Potassium and Vitamin B 12.

Milk is routinely fortified with other vitamins like D and A.

Because of its nutritional content milk is one of the best liquids to help the body recharge after exercise.
