Prescott Valley Police Warns of Gas Pump Skimmers Featured

By Cody Chewning April 10, 2019 459

A credit card skimmer was found at a local Circle K location.

The Prescott Valley Police Department wants to inform the public of a credit/debit card skimmer that was placed in a gas pump at the Circle K located at 6150 N. Hwy 69 in Prescott Valley. The skimmer has been removed and the Circle K location can be used without any concerns. Although it is a rare occurrence for the Town of Prescott Valley, this recent case has given enough justification for residents to take note. According to Krebson Security, “the skimmer gangs will gain access to the inside of the fuel pumps... Once inside the pumps, the thieves hook up their skimmer to the gas pump’s card reader and PIN pad. The devices also are connected to the pump’s electric power — so they don’t need batteries and can operate indefinitely. Most internal, modern pump skimmers are built to record the card data on a storage device that can transmit the data wirelessly via Bluetooth technology.”

Prescott Valley Police would like consumers to know there are certain precautions they can take next time they go purchase gas. Paying cash for the gas purchase or walking inside and using your card will help prevent skimmers from obtaining your card’s details. Older pumps are more susceptible to skimmers, so when possible use newer pumps and stations. Please always be aware of your card transactions and check your credit/debit statements often to ensure no fraudulent charges were made. If you do not recognize any transaction, call your bank as soon as possible and report the charges to their fraud department. After reporting the fraud to your bank, you can report the unauthorized activity to Prescott Valley Police Department or your local department based on your jurisdiction.

Prescott Valley Police Department can be contacted at (928) 772-9267 for non-emergencies, 911 for emergencies. You may also contact Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232.
