Sales, Menus and Recipes: It's Still Winter Featured

It’s Still Winter

It turns out that there may have been at least three Christian men named Valentine (Valentinius) in the third century A.D. who were martyred. Some legends regarding them have romantic overtones. The choice of Feb. 14 to celebrate St Valentine’s feast day may have been because of the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival celebrated on March 15 (“Beware the Ides of March”.)

But love is a popular theme in many cultures, and the celebration of Valentine’s Day has spread around the world. Sentimental cards, gifts, sweets, and special food are common. In Korea it has become a new tradition to get married on Valentine’s Day, and there are mass weddings to make this possible for many couples. In Japan women give chocolate and cards to men, who have to reciprocate a month later. In many traditions young women ate special foods or burned certain items to help reveal who their husband might be.
