K9 Vehicle Stop and Search Leads To 12 Pounds Of Heroin and 2 Suspects Featured

12 pounds of heroin were found in a vehicle near Cordes Junction.

On January 16, 2019, around 11:30 PM, a YCSO K9 deputy stopped a blue sedan with two occupants for moving violations on north I17 in the Cordes Lakes area. The driver was identified as 37-year-old Juan Breceda and his passenger, 32-year-old Laura Carrasco. Both are from New Mexico. While conversing with the driver, the deputy noticed ground up marijuana residue on the front passenger side floorboard.During a records check of both occupants, deputies located warrants for each. A deputy noted Juan remained unusually nervous throughout the interaction with law enforcement and downplayed his known criminal history. Juan denied travelling with anything illegal and when asked, consented to let deputies check his vehicle for contraband. Initially, deputies found a marijuana cigarette inside a cigar package stored in a passenger door compartment. When checking the trunk, deputies noticed the trunk liner appeared disturbed and when it was pulled back, several packages of heroin were found. They were field tested and returned positive for heroin. The total weight of all packages was 12 pounds.
