Sales, Menus & Recipes: Bits & Pieces Featured

It’s National Cookie Cutter Week.

Don’t forget. Next Wednesday, December 5 is Senior Discount Day at Safeway and Fry’s.

I found out one more turkey factoid. Virtually all domestic turkeys these days are descended from the Norfolk Broad Breast, developed in England in the 1800’s.

Special Sales This Week

Fry’s—has a Buy 5 get $5 off sale, over 2 pages of items including laundry soap, Nutella, Puffs and much more. They are also having a 3x Fuel Points event on all meats and seafood. Look for digital coupons.

Safeway—is featuring $5 Friday and a lot of coupons, both click and clip and digital. Safeway also has a lot of $1/each items. Watch for shelf tags throughout the store.

Sprouts—is still in post Thanksgiving mode with fewer featured items than usual.  But there are some good bargains, especially in bulk foods.

National Food Days This Week

November 28—French Toast Day

November 29—Chocolate Day (again, but can you really have too much chocolate)

November 30—Mousse Day

December 1—Pie Day

December 2—Fritters Day

December 3—Peppermint Latte Day (since I can’t drink coffee, I’m going to eat peppermint Ice cream, if I can find some)

December 4—Cookie Day

The first week in December is National Cookie Cutter Week. Get out all your cookie cutters and make sure they are ready for the month ahead.

December is National Pear Month. Ripen your fresh pears carefully. To quicken ripening put in a paper bag with a ripe apple. Just remember to check often. When the area around the stem gets slightly soft, eat your pears. Of course if you are cooking them they can be used sooner.

Nutella Mousse (WOW)
I’d just use whipping cream, don’t think it needs any more fat. And serve small amounts at a time. Extra fine sugar might help.

Day 4

Pork Chops with Cranberries and Apples
Brown Rice with Mushrooms
Eggplant Fritters
Apple Hand Pies

Pork Chops with Cranberry Relish I would add a little brown sugar and some cinnamon and cardamom. Maybe Walnuts or Pecans.

Eggplant Fritters
In a recipe like this exact measurements are not vital, but here are some conversions.
200ºC = 392º F (just under 400)
1.5 kilos = 3.3 lb
50 g parmesan cheese =1.8 oz = 5/8 cup
80 g breadcrumbs = almost 1 cup
You could mix this up & refrigerate until you are
ready to form and fry the patties.

Bonus Video

This knowledge will serve you well in lots of chocolate recipes.

How to Temper Chocolate
A Useful Technique Video
I like this method for most chocolate melting because thermometer methods are all set for sea level. This works for most recipes.
