A 500-acre brush fire is burning near Vail, Arizona.

Phoenix, AZ (5/6/17) – Multiple crews are working to contain a 500-acre brush fire that started up eight miles southeast of Vail, Arizona, earlier this afternoon.

The Mulberry Fire is now 45% contained, but continues to burn through tall grasses and brush.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department evacuated residents east of State Route 83 along milepost 52 within a few hours of the fire’s start. Roughly 20 residents have been evacuated. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Pima County Fairgrounds for fire evacuees.

Multiple resources, from the Department of Forestry and Fire Management, along with Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, and local fire departments are on scene. Nearly 200 fire personnel are actively working to suppress active fire behavior and protect structures, while ensuring the safety of both fire crews and the public. Aviation resources include six air tankers.

DFFM has requested additional resources.

There are no road closures now, but due to heavy smoke and traffic, DFFM requests drivers to avoid SR 83, if possible.
