Scammers Impersonate IRS Agents Featured

Beware! Scammers are out in full force.

It seems like the height of audaciousness, but scammers are now posing as IRS agents in their attempt to gain access into people’s wallets and identities.

According to IRS.gov, a new email scam has emerged. "According to the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel (TAP), taxpayers are receiving emails that appear to be from TAP about a tax refund. These emails are a phishing scam, where unsolicited emails which seem to come from legitimate organizations — but are really from scammers — try to trick unsuspecting victims into providing personal and financial information. Do not respond or click the links in them. If you receive an email that appears to be from TAP regarding your personal tax information, please forward it to This email address is being protected from spambots. "TAP is a volunteer board that advises the IRS on systemic issues affecting taxpayers. It never requests, and does not have access to, any taxpayer’s personal and financial information such as Social Security and PIN numbers or passwords and similar information for credit cards, banks or other financial institutions."

The problem of phishing and malware schemes is getting exponentially worse, too. So far, in the 2016 tax season, the IRS has seen an approximate 400% surge in incidents.

IRS Special Agent Brian Watson recently spoke to local groups about some of the scams that people have reported. Watson emphasized repeatedly that notices from the IRS do not come through your ‘inbox,' they are mailed out via postal mail. An IRS agent will never call and ask for your Social Security number or request any sort of payment over the phone.

Watson provides tips to keep information safe and prevent being scammed. Afterwards, Prescott Valley Police officers offer additional information about local frauds and scams.
