Embry-Riddle to Host VEX Robotics State Championship on Mar. 2 and 3

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott campus will host and compete in the 2018 VEX Robotics State Championship on Friday, March 2 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The competition will bring together over 40 high school teams and 15 college groups to further develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills in students throughout Arizona.

Challenging students to learn and innovate new designs in robotics engineering and application, the match cultivates lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, and communication. Winning teams go on to participate in the VEX Robotics World Competition in Louisville, Ky., recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest robotics competition on earth.

“With high school and college students being at the event, it allows for the high school student to see the college teams and what opportunities are out there,” said Geoffrey Winship, Robotics Outreach Mentor for Embry-Riddle.

This will be Embry-Riddle’s second consecutive year hosting the VEX Championship, and allows Embry-Riddle to increase its role as a state leader in STEM education by increasing K-12 interest in technology driven fields.

“Our university is committed to this community. We are a part of it as much as it is a part of us,” said Winship. “The structure of this event allows the college student in attendance to visit with the high school teams and pass on their knowledge.”

The event will take place at the Embry-Riddle Activity Center and is free and open to the public. Concessions will be available.
