Yavapai College soccer captured their 22nd NJCAA Region I Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 road victory in Tucson over the Aztecs from Pima Community College on Saturday night, October 28th. With the win, Yavapai College now becomes the host for the NJCAA West District Playoffs scheduled for Friday, November 3rd and Saturday, November 4th at Ken Lindley Field in Prescott.
Yavapai is now 19-2-3 on the year and Pima falls to 16-3-3. The Roughriders have beat the Aztecs 61 times in their storied history, the most wins against any one team. That is also the 76th Championship won by the Green and Gold including conference, region, district and national titles.
Alex Guadron opened the scoring in the 20th minute, assisted by Jose Perez Flores.
Pima Hugo Kametani tied the game for the Aztecs in the 40th minute, assisted by Ricky Flores.
Roughrider freshman attacker William Baynham had the deciding goal in the 51st minute, assisted by David Gandara
Tyler Trump played all 90 minutes in goal for the Roughriders, recording 6 saves. For the Aztecs, David Silva logged 90 minutes with 5 saves. Yavapai College had seven corner kicks to Pima’s three. The home team outshot the Roughrider kickers, 13-9
Yavapai College now advances to the West District Playoffs against an opponent and time yet to be determined. The games on Friday will begin at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM with the Championship match played on Saturday at 3:00 PM. All games will be played at Ken Lindley Field in Prescott.
Admission fees will be $5 for adults, $3 for students, while six-years-old and under are free. No passes will be honored.
