'No Boundaries' - Pilot Jessica Cox to Speak at ERAU Featured

Born Without Arms, Jessica Cox Has Learned to Fly

Thirty-four years ago, pilot Jessica Cox, was born in Sierra Vista, Arizona without arms. But that hasn’t stopped her from achieving her dreams. Cox will be speaking at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Wednesday evening at 7 PM. The event is open to the community.

Cox offers an unusual challenge: ‘Think outside the shoe,” and she’s willing to show you how. Speaking to audiences across the world, her main topics are ingenuity, desire, persistence, attitude, and fearlessness. Imagine, if you have no arms, how do you open a can of soda, brush your hair, put in your contact lenses and tie both shoes ? What about typing or driving or pumping your own gas?

None of that has stopped Cox, who faced her challenges head on, saying that she has learned to erase, “I can’t” from her vocabulary.

Learning how to fly is an intimidating endeavor for most people. But Cox believes in “…turning the ‘impossible’ into ‘accomplishment’." According to her website,, "It took three states, four airplanes, two flight instructors and a discouraging year to find the right aircraft: a 1946 415C Ercoupe Airplane."

Cox’s achievements include:

  • being a nationally awarded pilot
  • earning a black belt in Taekwondo at age 14,
  • certification as a scuba diver,
  • giving motivational talks all over the world,
  • graduating from the University of Arizona
  • Receiving a Guinness World Record

The event is free of charge and open to the community.
