Fire Damages VFW Post

Post Officer Opened Door; Saw Heavy Smoke and Called 911

  • Dispatch Time – 9:14 A.M.
  • On-Scene Time – 9:18 A.M.
  • Under Control – 9:34 A.M.

A fire damaged a VFW Post building in the 5700 block of South Fontana Avenue Monday morning. An officer of the Post arrived at the building and noticed heavy black smoke when he opened the door to enter. He immediately called 9-1-1 reporting the smoke and stayed out. The Post was not open and no one was thought to be inside when he arrived. The first Tucson Fire unit arrived on scene and confirmed black smoke coming from the area of the Post that had a bar and several pool tables. The firefighters from the Engine pulled a hoseline into the door and turned to the right where they saw the glow of the fire. They were able to extinguish the flames which appeared to be in the area of the bar. The ladder crew controlled utilities to the building and set up a high powered fan to evacuate any residual smoke from the building, reducing the smoke damage. Multiple searches were performed to confirm the building was empty. Nine units consisting of 23 firefighters responded to the scene and controlled the fire 16 minutes after arriving. There were no injuries reported by firefighters. Building Safety/Code Enforcement was responding to the scene but the Post was expected to be closed due to the smoke and fire damage. Fire Investigators were on scene but still working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
