Today, City of Mesa Officials Announced More Than 300,000 Baseball Fans Attended Spring Training Games in Mesa

The Chicago Cubs set a new attendance record, attracting more than 225,663 fans to 15 games during Cactus League Spring Training play for an average of 15,044 people per game, beating 2015’s attendance records of 222,415 and 14,828 respectively.

On March 20, the Cubs drew the largest single-game crowd in Cactus League spring-training history with a record 15,523 fans attending the game against the Kansas City Royals, surpassing last year’s record of 15,342 against the Chicago White Sox.

Meanwhile, the Oakland A’s attracted 100,614 fans during 15 games averaging 6,708 people per game.

“The Cubs and A’s continue to draw a huge amount of fans to Mesa and we could not be happier. It is a great opportunity to showcase our City and the great amenities we have, not to mention the economic boost both the Cubs and the A’s bring to Mesa during spring training,” Mayor John Giles said.

According to a 2015 study by FMR Associates, spring training teams and the ballparks they play in are a driving force in Arizona’s economy, generating more than $809 million in economic impact for the state. Included in that number is more than $544 million that results from out-of-state Cactus League fans attending games at 10 Greater Phoenix area ballparks.

“We call spring training our second Christmas season for Mesa because of the positive lift in sales for our hotels, restaurants and retail stores,” City Manager Chris Brady said.

This is the Cubs third season in the newly built Sloan Park, 2330 W. Rio Salado Parkway, and the A’s second season at the newly renovated Hohokam Stadium, 1235 N. Center St. For additional information about Mesa’s economic assets, visit www.mesaaz.gov/economic.
