Pitcher Chance Adams Ranks as MLB's 62nd Best Prospect and Utility Player Willie Calhoun Moves to #70 on Mid-Season Rankings

PRESCOTT- Major League Baseball’s Pipeline 2017 Prospect Watch released their mid-season rankings and Yavapai College Roughrider alumni Chance Adams moved from #93 on the list to #62, while Willie Calhoun went from #82 to #70.

Chance Adams, 22, was selected in the fifth round of the 2015 MLB Draft (153rd overall) by the New York Yankees.

Adams was unranked in the preseason but has since shot up the Top 100 list and comes in as the Yankees #3 overall prospect. Following a year as a reliever, Adams became a starter in 2016 and twirled a 2.33 ERA between high A and AA while going 13-1 and striking out 144 batters over 127.1 innings pitched.

Adams’ success has continued so far in 2017 as he climbed the Yankees’ minor league system pitching in both AA and AAA going 10-3 with 1.96 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 110.1 innings.

Meanwhile, Willie Calhoun, 22, is a utility player in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league system currently playing at the AAA affiliate Oklahoma City Dodgers and is considered Los Angeles’ fourth overall prospect. Calhoun was selected in the 4th round (132nd pick overall) in the 2015 MLB Draft by Los Angeles.

Calhoun started the season ranked as the #82 overall prospect but has moved up to #70 and it’s easy to see why as so far in 2017, his first season in AAA, Calhoun has slashed .302 with 23 home runs and 67 RBIs in 96 games.

Finally, while not being ranked in the Top 100, left handed pitcher JoJo Romero, 20, has moved up from the Philadelphia Phillies team preseason ranking of #26 to #18. Romero was drafted in the fourth round (107th overall) of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Phillies.

So far between low A and high A in 2017, Romero is 7-3 with a 2.30 ERA and has recorded 103 strikeouts in 98 innings.
