Yavapai County: Recent Incident Overviews – Burglary Suspects and Speeding DUI Driver Featured

Burglary in Seligman, speeding in Mayer

Suspects arrested for burglary of residence in Seligman –

On February 12, 2017, YCSO deputies were dispatched to a parcel in remote Seligman, Arizona, on E. Fort Rock Road, regarding a burglary. The victim reported that on December 30, 2016 3 suspects forced entry into their unoccupied cabin and storage containers on the property and stole several items including lanterns, butane canisters, hand tools, and storage boxes. The property is posted ‘No Trespassing.’ Well placed game cameras had been set up in the vicinity and captured the activity of the suspects. The victim recognized 2 of the suspects who had family nearby. The victim’s report was delayed while he apparently conducted follow-up on his own before contacting YCSO.

The assigned deputy continued investigating and learned the identity of the suspects was 38-year-old Shawn Schmitt, his 16-year-old son, and their family friend, 39-year-old James Hudson from Prescott Valley. On February 21, 2017, deputies located Hudson in Prescott Valley and he was arrested for charges including Burglary, Theft and Trespass, after admitting involvement. Several stolen items were later recovered from his home. Schmitt’s son had been interviewed earlier and also acknowledged participating with his dad in the burglary. His case will be to referred to Juvenile Probation authorities. His father, Shawn Schmitt, turned himself in at the Prescott jail on February 28, 2017, and was booked on the same charges as Mr. Hudson. Both have since been release pending court action.

DUI suspect gives fake name –

On February 24, 2017, around 10:30 PM, 26-year-old Spriggs Slow Shorty from Whiteriver, Arizona, was arrested at the intersection of AZ-69 and Wildcat Way, Mayer, and charged with Aggravated DUI, Providing a False Name and Excessive Speed. He remains in the Camp Verde Detention Center on a

$7500 bond.

Background - While on patrol, a YCSO deputy saw a white mini-van travelling at 90 mph south on AZ-69. The deputy pulled behind the vehicle, activated emergency lights and attempted to stop the van which continued several hundred yards before yielding near Mayer High School. The driver told the deputy he was not licensed and gave his name and a birth date indicating he was 17-years-old. There was also a female passenger in the van who claimed she was the driver’s mother and interrupted her ‘son’ trying to speak on his behalf to the deputy. She did not possess any identification. While speaking with the pair, the deputy detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and person.

The driver failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for DUI. While still on scene, the driver gave several different names to various deputies he contacted. With the booking process underway and no record of the names provided by the driver, deputies called the Whiteriver Police Department where the driver’s mother was from and they identified a possible suspect. Deputies received a photo from officers which matched the driver and confirmed his identity as Spriggs Shorty. Checking his true name in wanted records revealed a $5000 warrant out of Maricopa County. Spriggs then claimed the photo was that of his brother then accidentally admitted knowing about his Maricopa County warrant.

Initial DUI breath test results revealed a .15 reading, nearly twice the legal limit.
