Fresh Fall Produce Just One Component, as New Vendors Help Market Grow
GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Glendale Farmers Market, which began this past Spring in Downtown Glendale, will start its new season on Saturday, Oct. 8, 8 a.m.- 12 p.m., with events twice each month through May. The market is located in the parking lot of the First United Methodist Church, 7102 N. 58th Dr.
In its continued mission to support local farmers and small businesses, as well as encourage healthy, fresh eating, the Glendale Farmers Market has brought a unique new vendor on board that will sell brush-fed beef. Jojoba Beef, ranchers out of Pinal County, raise their cattle on wild desert scrub – jojoba, which has small leaves and nutrient-dense seeds, better known for the oil it produces. Not only do the cattle live off the land, the ranch has created sustainable water sources – with solar pumps to pump well water. The ranch’s 200 head of cattle will only use four acre-feet of water, versus an irrigated farm, on which one cow will use four acre-feet of water.
In addition to the brush-fed beef, all kinds of new vendors will participate in the market this season, from local craft artisans, to other local business owners and delicious food vendors and restaurateurs. Each event will see around 40 vendors total.
"We invite everyone across the Valley to come down on these Saturday mornings to the charming, tree lined area that is the perfect spot to purchase fresh, locally-farmed produce and browse vendors selling other goods that are also made here locally," said Linda Moran-Whittley, owner of Papa Ed's Ice Cream in the Catlin Court Historic District. "And not only that, visitors can have breakfast or lunch, and enjoy a stroll to the many shops and boutiques that have made downtown Glendale such a unique and popular destination.”
The Glendale Farmers Market's mission is and community based organizations, many of which will also be invited to participate in various ways. In addition, the purpose of the market is to provide a marketplace for healthy, nutritious and sustainable foods systems for residents throughout the Valley.
Additional highlights planned for the market include interactive children’s activities and different community groups and 501c3 group involvement.
