Kayla Mueller, a Northern Arizona University (NAU) graduate, will be honored posthumously and inducted into the Social and Behavioral Sciences Hall of Fame this Saturday during the university's homecoming weekend.
According to NAU News, Mueller will be recognized as an outstanding alumni, along with film producer Carol Kottenbrook, journalist Lynn Bartels and NPR correspondent Claudio Sanchez.
Mueller, an international aid worker, was taken captive by ISIS in Syria on August 4, 2013. It was confirmed in February, 2015, that she was killed while in captivity.
Mueller attended elementary and high school in Prescott before going to NAU.
Mueller’s parents have established the Kayla’s Hands Foundation to further their daughter's humanitarian efforts both locally and abroad. An NAU scholarship will also be established in her honor.
“I’ve known for some time what my life’s work is, using my hands as tools to relieve suffering.” - Kayla Mueller
